Selectman, New Canaan, CT
The Board of Selectmen is the
Town's executive body. Three members are elected in odd-numbered years to serve
a two-year term, with the First Selectman serving in a full-time, salaried
position.
The Selectmen appoint all members of non-elected boards and commissions,
choosing from candidates recommended to them from the Republican and Democratic
Town Committees. They also hire all Town employees, except those employed by the
Board of Education and the Police Department. The Selectmen, however, are
responsible for the administration and negotiation of labor agreements with the
police, paid firefighters, and public works employees.
Financial requests from all Town departments are reviewed by the Board of
Selectmen and then forwarded with recommendations to the Board of Finance. The
Board also acts as the purchasing and contracting agent for the Town, except in
Board of Education matters.
